Automate Your Roller Shutters with Home Assistant (Easy Guide)

The days are getting longer and warmer again. It was time to equip my sunscreen and roller shutter with a smart switch so I can control them using Home Assistant. This way, I can automatically raise and lower them during hot weather or in the evening. I happened to have two Shelly 2.5 units lying around, which made this very easy to accomplish.

Add SelectPlus Doorbell to Home Assistant with RFXcom

SelectPlus deurbel

This week, while going through my smarthome box, I came across my old SelectPlus doorbell chime. I last used it back in my Domoticz days. I was curious whether I could get it working again in Home Assistant. Just for fun — and it actually worked! Maybe you still have one lying around as well. At the time, it was available for six euros at Action.

Flash LSC’s addressable LED strip with ESPHome and use it in Home Assistant

Last month I picked up the LSC Smart Ledstrip RGBIC+CCTIC (3203632.1) at Action. It’s a smart LED strip with both addressable RGB and addressable CCT LEDs. Straight out of the box, you can control it with the Tuya Smart Life app—choose effects, set colors per segment, the works.

The big difference compared to a regular LED strip? You can split it into sections and give each part its own color. Pretty cool. But here’s the catch: in Home Assistant, the strip only shows up as a single device via the Tuya integration. So all those fancy segment effects or per-LED controls? Gone.

That got me thinking: there has to be a better way. I don’t want to rely on Tuya’s cloud, but I do want full control with WLED or ESPHome. So I started digging into the options—and let’s just say, the outcome turned out way better than expected.

Mitsubishi Air Conditioner with Wi‑Fi using MHI‑AC‑Ctrl, ESPHome and Home Assistant

Mitsubishi airco voorzien van wifi verbinding

Last summer, I moved to a new house where air conditioners had already been installed. They are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries units, controlled via an infrared remote. Naturally, I wanted to control these air conditioners using Home Assistant over WiFi. During my search, I came across the MHI-AC-Ctrl project. Nodo-Shop turned out to sell complete kits, and there is also an ESPHome version of the MHI-AC-Ctrl project. Great! I ordered a kit for each air conditioner and got to work.

Zendure Home Battery integration

Even before it became clear what the new feed-in tariffs would be after the abolition of the net metering scheme, I was already exploring home batteries. Initially, I mainly looked at the large fixed models such as the Sessy or Tesla Powerwall. But soon I became enthusiastic about another type: modular plug-in home batteries.

The big advantage? You can start small and expand your installation step by step. No hassle with installers or major adjustments to your meter box. Just plug & play. Exactly what I was looking for.

Increase the range of your Zigbee network with a Zigbee router

zigbee zigate mesh network

If the range of your Zigbee coordinator is a bit disappointing, some sensors will be disconnected from your Zigbee network. Annoying, because you cannot receive information from those sensors. You can improve and enlarge the mesh through a device powered by 230v, such as a lamp. They also act as a Zigbee router and increase your reach and strengthen your mesh network, but it can also be done differently. With some cheap hardware and some free software.
